The purpose of this training is to improve providers’ health literacy and optimize client-centered communication through improved understanding of the unique structural barriers faced by people with HIV.

This module provides an overview of antiretroviral therapy (ART) including the benefits and goals of therapy, when to initiate therapy, initial regimen options, and what patients can expect after starting ART.

This module provides a review of keys to success with antiretroviral therapy (ART) including importance of adherence, strategies to promote adherence, resources to assist patients in maintaining access to medications, and regimen simplification.
Boosting HIV Linkage and Retention in Care Efforts Through the Lens of Evidence
This training module provides a comprehensive overview of key concepts and strategies for improving linkage, engagement, and retention in HIV prevention, treatment, and care. It explores how healthcare teams collaborate to support clients facing stigma, social determinants of health, and emotional challenges such as depression and anxiety. The module highlights effective communication techniques that help professionals build meaningful connections with patients experiencing difficult emotions, and presents evidence-based and evidence-informed interventions proven to enhance patient engagement and retention in HIV care.
Case Manager 101
This training module provides a foundational overview of medical case management in HIV care. It identifies common knowledge gaps and training needs emerging from basic medical case management instruction, and offers up-to-date information on core topics essential to effective practice. The module also introduces fundamental concepts that underpin medical case management, equipping participants with the baseline understanding needed to support clients through coordinated, patient-centered care.
Health Literacy Capacity Building: HIV Medical Case Management
This training module provides a practical overview of HIV-related health literacy and its impact on client outcomes. It explains the distinction between general literacy and health literacy, and explores strategies for building trust and fostering social connection to support the wellbeing and quality of life of people with HIV. The module highlights key performance measures and actionable strategies aimed at improving health literacy, and introduces best practices for guiding clients in preparing for HIV-focused health appointments and medication adherence.
HIV 101
This training module provides an introductory overview of HIV and its impact on the immune system. It defines key terms such as “HIV” and “CD4 cell,” clarifies how HIV is transmitted—and how it is not—and distinguishes between HIV and AIDS. The module also outlines the four core strategies of the Ending the HIV Epidemic in America initiative, offering a foundational understanding of national efforts to reduce new infections and improve health outcomes.
Mental Health: Basics for Medical Case Management
This training module provides a foundational overview of mental health and its role in overall wellbeing. It introduces key concepts related to emotional health, highlights common challenges such as depression and anxiety, and explains the core principles of trauma-informed care. The module also presents effective treatment approaches for maintaining and improving mental health, equipping participants with practical strategies to support clients in HIV care and beyond.
Motivational Interviewing Basics
This training module provides an in-depth introduction to motivational interviewing (MI) as a client-centered approach to HIV prevention and disease management. It describes the spirit and principles of MI, and demonstrates core communication skills that foster collaboration and support behavior change. Participants will explore the concept of active listening to assess readiness for change, learn the four fundamental counseling skills that guide MI conversations, and identify key elements of the MI process. The module includes opportunities to observe and critique real-world health encounters, and culminates in a guided 10-minute MI session to practice applying MI techniques in HIV-related care.
Primary Care and HIV Management Across the Lifespan
This training module provides a foundational overview of HIV management within the context of primary care. It explores how HIV care is integrated across different stages of life, emphasizing age-specific considerations, prevention strategies, and treatment approaches. The module highlights the role of primary care providers in supporting long-term health outcomes for people with HIV through coordinated, patient-centered care.
